Just returned to Los Angeles from the CAVS meeting in Tucson. The meeting was attended by gynecologists, urologists, and plastic surgeons - great turnout. Lectures and presentations dawn to dusk. I was asked to present "Urologic Complications of Aesthetic Vaginal Surgery" during the second day of the conference. A group of great surgeons trying to support surgical excellence, education and scientific inquiry.
Most compelling was a great presentation by an Egyptian Surgeon on the horrors of genital mutilation. It is no longer easy to shock me, but it was difficult to look at the images.
All in all, a worthwhile trip. Back to work!

As urologists, we meet all new ED treatments with healthy skepticism. On the other hand, we know there are patients who have been left behind when Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are not working. A new treatment modality, Viberect, proposes improved erections by utilizing vibration therapy to stimulate nerves responsible for filling the penis with blood during erection.
Hope or Hype? Only time and clinical studies will tell. We'll have to see how it works with our patients.

It's always nice to start a blog entry with a paraphrase of an Academy Award acceptance speech. Sally Field (as Norma Rae) won an Oscar for delivering her co-workers from the oppression of Dickensian cotton mill. Although I am a urologist in the movie capital of the world, it's fair to say, sadly, that I will never hold an Oscar at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion (or anywhere else). Our recognition, as physicians, is virtually always silent and confined to the barriers of the examination or operating room.
Imagine my surprise to be notified of being voted best urologist by a readers' poll by the Daily News here in Los Angeles. How nice to imagine a grateful person taking the time to vote for me!
Alas, it is business as usual at the Southern California Center for Advanced Urology. No post-awards parties by Vanity Fair. I am content with the honor and wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a Nobel Prize).
