Labia Majora Reduction
The labia majora may also have an enlarged appearance. This is actually a fairly common occurrence, but can be exacerbated (made more noticeable) by estrogen stimulation, childbirth, and extreme weight loss. The outline of the enlarged labia majora can be prominent when wearing tight-fitting clothing, causing self-consciousness and embarrassment. Labia majora reduction labiaplasty reduces the amount of tissue in the labia majora, resulting in a far less conspicuous appearance.
Each patient may desire a different outcome which is why Dr. Safir can recommend
the proper procedure. Reduction of the labia majora may be performed in conjunction
with reduction of the labia minora. If labial reduction surgery is performed, the
surgical scar is hidden in the natural crease between the labia majora and labia minora.
Dr. Safir can safely perform this operation in his office under local anesthesia
and oral sedatives in approximately 60 minutes.
Labia Minora Hypertrophy
About Urinary Incontinence
Some women have labial hypertrophy, a condition where the labia minora are disproportionately large compared to the labia majora. The labia minora may also have noticeable asymmetry.
As with other types of vaginal surgery, there may be both aesthetic and functional considerations:
Aesthetic Issues:
From an aesthetic perspective, women may be dissatisfied because of the oversized and/or asymmetrical appearance of the labia minora. Often, women may be self-conscious because the condition is visible when wearing swimsuits, leotards, and other revealing clothing.
Functional Issues:
Labial hypertrophy may also cause a number of functional problems, including pain and discomfort during sex, hygiene issues such as wetness, chafing and irritation (and sometimes infection) resulting from folds of excess labial tissue, and discomfort during physical exercise. Labiaplasty procedures involving labia minora reduction can effectively reduce women's anxiety about their body image while simultaneously resolving these functional problems. Patients are much more comfortable during sex and can thus enjoy it more.
