Enlarged Prostate (BPH) - Diagnosis

Diagnosis of BPH

Dr. Safir is equipped at his Los Angeles area urology offices to perform all the most advanced diagnostic tests for BPH and other prostate problems. He will perform a thorough examination to rule out conditions such as prostate cancer or prostatitis. Although prostate cancer is also an “overgrowth” of cells in the prostate, BPH is NOT prostate cancer. As with every other urological problem, proper diagnosis of BPH is critical. The tests Dr. Safir uses for BPH diagnosis include:

  • PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test.
  • Urinalysis/urine culture – used to rule out any urinary tract infection.
  • Urodynamic testing – evaluates urinary function by measuring pressure, volume, and flow rate of urine before, during, and after voiding (urination). Testing takes only a short amount of time, is minimally invasive, and is performed in Dr. Safir’s office.
Dr. Safir will likely recommend looking into the bladder with a scope (cystoscopy) to verify that the problem is actually prostate-related.
At his Los Angeles office, Dr. Safir is equipped with the latest technology to perform the most advanced diagnostic tests for BPH and other prostate problems.

If you have uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as getting up multiple times a night to urinate, do something about it! Get diagnosed. It’s easy to do: click here to make an appointment, or call 1-800-DR-SAFIR.

The Difference That Dr. Safir Brings...

Dr. Michael Safir is not only a board-certified urologist; he is also a nationally-renowned urologic surgeon. He specializes in the rapidly developing field of reconstructive urology. Dr. Safir is one of only a handful of urologists worldwide to have completed separate fellowship training in reconstructive female urology surgery (at UCLA) and male genitourinary surgery (at UCSF). The American Board of Medical Specialties has just recently recognized female pelvic reconstructive surgery as a distinct subspecialty.

Dr. Safir lectures at medical conventions and seminars, and travels throughout the country training other urologists and gynecologists in the latest, advanced techniques for surgical treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse.
