About Urethral Stricture
Urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra. This narrowing is often caused
by injury or disease, though it is sometimes genetic. Men are far more commonly
affected than women. Los Angeles urologist Dr. Michael Safir understands the effect
urethral stricture can have on a person’s quality of life, as he often diagnoses
and treats patients suffering from this condition in both his Beverly Hills and
West Hills urology offices.
Causes of Urethral Stricture
In some cases, urethral stricture is a remnant of a past urinary tract infection
(UTI). People with a history of sexually transmitted disease or bouts of urethritis
may therefore develop urethral stricture. However, this is not the most common cause
of the problem.
Urethral stricture is most often caused by pelvic injury, or injury to the urethra
itself; this can happen from falling onto the bar of a bicycle, or from an impact
to the urethral area such as being hit with a ball or kicked in the groin. Injury
may also result from passing kidney stones or from an instrument such as a urinary
catheter used in previous pelvic surgery.
Sometimes, urethral stricture in men may be a symptom of a larger issue, such as BPH - commonly known as an enlarged prostate - or prostate cancer.
